European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
BM02 - Anomalous Scattering

D2AM - a French CRG at ESRF - is a beamline dedicated to structural investigations using anomalous scattering in materials science, with two instruments: a Kappa diffractometer and a Small Angle X-ray Scattering bench. Structural studies near absorption edges are widely used to create an anomalous contrast between atoms and to study short or long range order.

In order to achieve an easily adjustable wavelength near absorption edges between 5,5 and 35 keV, at a fixed point focus position, a symmetrical optics has been designed, installed at the output of a bending magnet. The optics consists of a two crystal monochromator with sagittal focusing (mainly Si(111) but Si(311) is also available) located between two cylindrically bent mirrors in a compact arrangement, with double focusing (3:1).

kappa goniometer

Description
The KAPPA diffractometer for Materials Science is driven with the spec-kappa geometry. It leaves a large free space to adapt the sample environment. For the detection, vertical rotation axis NU and horizontal axis DELTA (-5°, + 130°) can carry an optional vertical analyzer. All the angular motions have a resolution lower than 0.001°, the confusion sphere being smaller than 0.06 mm. Using a Si (111) analyzer, FWHM less than 0.02° (2THETA) should be reached with powder samples. An optional goniometer-head (two translation on top of two cradles) is available on top of the kappa head for surfaces applications.

saxs bench

Description
the SAXS bench is a 4 m-long granite table installed after the kappa diffractometer. Along the beam direction, this table is mainly used for SAXS experiments where motorized sample stages, specific sample vessels, and detector holders can be set up at any position.

Softwares For Data Analysis
  • Python-based short scripts were written by beamline scientists to perform specific treatments, such as the conversion from angular to reciprocal space, azimuthal integrations and correction of distortions induced by the detectors’ geometries, data visualization (3D maps, cuts), and fittings. Software developed at the ESRF and at the beamline by the D2AM scientists are routinely used to perform such treatments: Pymca, PyFAI (Fast Azimuthal Integration using Python) suite, XSOCS, SILXS.
